Winter in Maine

crosscountryski_257The holiday season in this region of Maine offers light displays, caroling, festivals, Christmas strolls and craft fairs in almost every town, from Gardiner and Hallowell to Norridgewock, Waterville and Jackman. Historic homes are lit up, local crafters and artisans display their wares, and visitors can join in a neighborhood caroling session or take a walking tour of the town.

Be sure to check the schedule of events for concerts, plays, and holiday meals as well.
The winter season is also the perfect time for outdoor activities, and the Kennebec and Moose River Valley region boasts the state’s best snowmobiling, ice fishing, cross-country skiing, and ice skating.

Miles and miles of groomed snowmobile trails can take you anywhere you want to go, and many facilities offer snowmobile rentals and guided tours. In The Forks or Jackman, ride along the Kennebec River and through pristine evergreen forests; in Winthrop, Readfield, or Belgrade Lakes, when the ice is thick, take a thrilling ride across the lakes for stunning views and plenty of fresh air.
