The Moose River Valley may have some of the best snowmobiling opportunities in the world yet only a little over two hours from Portland or three and half hours from Boston to reach the heart of the valley. The snowmobile trail system has a tremendous variety of opportunities from backcountry non-maintained off trail experiences with guided trips available, to slow and narrow windy trails often enjoyed by family groups, then on to the wide high quality touring trails that travel long distances across the region.
Visiting this region in the winter traditionally known for it’s rafting, hunting, and fishing can be a breath taking experience. The scenery during the winter may not be recognizable for those returning to such places as Grand Falls, Moxie Falls, Coburn Mountain or Historic Pittston Farm. When you add 3-10 feet of snow cover to the landscape or 50’thick ice around the falls it is an amazing time to bring your camera. There may not be a prettier time to visit many of these magic places.
The region caters extensively to folks that live or play on the trail system from local trails maintained by a small army of dedicated volunteer snowmobile club members to paid professional “groomer operators” that work so hard to provide quality trails. There is a vast variety of conditions throughout the region to meet the expectations of those looking for a variety of individual experiences. Many businesses are set up to cater to snowmobilers from guided, fully outfitted rental facilities, five star restaurants, evening entertainment at local brewing facilities or very remote and primitive lodges with wood heated log cabins and nothing but quiet camp fires and northern lights to entertain visitors.
Some visitors simply want to snowmobile a short distance to access fishing on hard water (ice thick enough to support snowmobiles). The region again provides a vast array of experiences from the traditional trout and salmon waters of Moosehead lake, to the growing popularity of Muskie fishing in the Belgrade area. It’s all here and it is world class.
Who has ever heard of Athens and Rome? No not across the big pond in Europe but small towns located in this region. Well they provide some of the most outstanding “family” friendly snowmobile trails in the northeast. Visitors for the first time should check with local clubs and businesses for up to date information on trail conditions and trail side availability to snowmobile service facilities.
This region is home to 53 snowmobile clubs, 16 municipalities and Somerset County all supporting the maintenance of over 2,000 miles of trail. For those seeking the remote off trail experience there is a total of 4,794 square miles of land and 253 square miles of hard public water. This region is bigger than some countries and clearly has more miles of trail than many states in the snowbelt. It also is one of the greatest areas to view winder wildlife including deer, moose, bald eagles and many more species of wildlife living in Maine.
Come visit and enjoy this region. It clearly provides experiences you will never forget or get enough of. Winter in the Kennebec and Moose River Valleys is what Maine is all about……The Way Life Should Be in Vacation land. Maine is a winter wonderland and this region is the heart of it.
